Official Android Gingerbread Update for Samsung Galaxy ACE

Finally, the official android gingerbread update for Samsung galaxy ace smartphone released for India. I have updated my galaxy to android 2.3.4 using KIES software. Here are some noticeable changes that I've found in a quick look.

Visual changes - There are not many visual changes made on the gingerbread version of android. Major changes are in the notification area. The battery status indicator become little small but vertically placed and some minor changes in the signal strength looks. The screen looks more like a high resolution phone and contrast increased a bit. A new wallpaper is added to inbuilt wallpaper gallery.

Talkback keyboard - A new input method for blind users were added to this update which can be enabled from accessibility options in settings.

Music Player - Another major change is on the music player. The album art image fills most of the screen and a fading seek bar appears when you touches the screen. Also you can drag the songs to access next song which is a cool feature.

  • Selecting Data Network - A shortcut is added to power menu (press and hold power key) which allows you to select data network or network without a gprs connection.
  • Gaming Performance - The most noticeable change in this firmware update is the performance of games in this version of android. The lag that were present in the froyo version disappeared in gingerbread for some games and it plays very smoothly. (NFS shift, PES 2011 tested)
  • Battery - Definitely some improvement but not much.
  • Other changes: - Phone memory space remains the same before and after the update. RAM usage increased slightly. Settings and other menu items load faster.
Something bad about this update is still no adobe flash player support! Otherwise a smooth android 2.3.4
